Samsung's Smart Forward Updates: Elevating Home Appliance Functionality and Safety

Samsung Electronics has announced a series of updates under the Smart Forward initiative, aimed at enhancing the functionality, future-proofing, and safety of its home appliances. These updates will be rolled out to select devices throughout the second half of the year, bringing new features and improvements to existing appliances.

Key Takeaways

  • Samsung's Smart Forward updates will enhance functionality, future-proofing, and safety of home appliances.

  • New features include Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch, and Fridge Call for Family Hub™ refrigerators.

  • Updates will be available for appliances produced as far back as 2021.

  • Enhanced Bixby functionality and energy-saving features are also part of the updates.

New Functionalities Alter Kitchen Experiences

The Smart Forward updates introduce an array of new functionalities designed to enhance the user experience and appliance performance. The Family Hub™, a touch screen panel installed on the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator for food management, entertainment, and communication, will now come with Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch, and Fridge Call. These features significantly improve connectivity and usability.

  • Quick Share: Allows users to quickly send photos to the Family Hub™ screen directly from their mobile device.

  • Buds Auto Switch: Seamlessly switches Galaxy Buds between the Family Hub™ and a mobile device for uninterrupted cooking experiences.

  • Fridge Call: Enables users to receive phone calls directly on the Family Hub™ using its microphone and speaker.

Additionally, Quick Remote, a feature that turns a user's mobile phone into a remote control for connected Samsung appliances, is being expanded across refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners produced since 2023.

Future-Proofing Home Appliances

Samsung is also focused on future-proofing existing appliances. The upgraded Bixby will understand commands with multiple intentions and remember the most recent conversation. This advanced functionality transforms the way users interact with their appliances, making voice commands more intuitive and responsive.

  • Bixby Enhancements: The upgraded Bixby can now open refrigerator doors upon verbal request and create custom wallpapers for the fridge’s screen.

  • Custom Wallpapers: Available for refrigerators with Family Hub™ launched in Korea and the U.S. after 2022, allowing users to personalize their kitchen space.

Safer Use and Lower Energy Consumption

In terms of safety and energy savings, Samsung is rolling out updates to older models, including refrigerators made as far back as 2021. These updates include:

  • Power Outage Notifications: Refrigerators will notify users via the SmartThings app when internal temperature is high after a power outage.

  • Custom Chimes: Users can choose different chimes for open door notifications.

  • Ice Maker Sleep Mode: Prevents ice makers from working during the night to avoid disruptive sounds.

  • Optimal Scheduling: Delays the start of appliances to avoid running during peak energy usage hours, helping users cut down on energy costs.

These updates reflect Samsung’s broader strategy of providing value to customers by enhancing the products they already own. By continuously improving the functionality and performance of its appliances, Samsung ensures that users do not have to worry about their devices becoming obsolete.

Samsung’s updated home appliances will be showcased at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from September 6 to 10, where visitors will be able to see and experience each feature.
