Keeping Your Stainless Steel Appliances Sparkling Clean

Updated: Aug 6

Stainless steel appliances are a beloved choice in many Canadian homes, especially when it comes to dishwashers, ranges, and refrigerators. Their sleek appearance and durability make them a top pick. However, they show fingerprints, smudges, water spots, and streaks, particularly in high-traffic kitchens or homes with children. In this guide, I'll share my tried-and-true methods for keeping your stainless steel appliances looking brand new, along with some personal tips I've learned.

So, how do you clean stainless steel appliances?

The Basics of Stainless Steel Cleaning

First things first, it's crucial to avoid harsh cleaning agents like abrasives, scouring powders, bleach, ammonia, and steel wool. These can scratch and dull the finish of your stainless steel appliances. Always refer to the owner’s manual for specific cleaning recommendations from the manufacturer.

Effective Cleaning Methods

Dish Soap

One of the simplest methods involves using dish soap. Mix one teaspoon of dish detergent with one quart of hot tap water. Use a microfiber cloth to gently apply and rub the solution onto the appliance, always following the grain of the steel. Rinse with hot water and dry immediately. I find this method particularly effective for daily cleaning – it's quick and leaves the surface looking fresh.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is a fantastic alternative to commercial stainless steel cleaners. Avoid food-based oils like olive or vegetable oil, as they can leave a residue. Apply a light coat of mineral oil and buff it in, following the grain. This trick was a lifesaver when I ran out of my usual cleaner right before a dinner party—the appliances looked immaculate!

White Vinegar

White vinegar is another household staple that works wonders on stainless steel. Spray it directly onto a microfiber cloth and wipe down the appliance, following the grain. It's a natural, effective way to tackle smudges and streaks. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and something I always have on hand.

Window Cleaner

An ammonia-free and vinegar-free window cleaner like Windex can also do the trick. Spray it onto a dry cloth and wipe down the appliance. This method is my go-to for a quick shine right before guests arrive.

Club Soda

For a quick polish, spray club soda onto the surface and wipe with a soft cloth, always following the grain. This was a surprising discovery, but it enhanced the shine.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

  1. Initial Wipe Down: Dip a soft cloth in your chosen cleaner and wipe down the appliance’s surface. Rinse the cloth and repeat if necessary.

  2. Removing Fingerprints and Streaks: Use a glass or window cleaner on a soft cloth to wipe away any remaining fingerprints or streaks. I find this especially useful for my refrigerator door, which seems to attract prints like a magnet.

  3. Tackling Baked-On Food and Grease: Mix baking soda with warm water to create a paste. Apply it to the affected spots and rub it with a soft cloth or sponge. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and towel dry. This method works wonders on my oven door after heavy use.

  4. Final Buffing: Buff your appliances with a dry microfiber cloth for an added shine following the grain. This is the finishing touch that makes everything look pristine.

Maintenance Tips

To prevent buildup, regularly wipe down your appliances. Periodically, use stainless steel polish for extra protection and shine. This keeps my appliances looking new even with daily use.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives

White vinegar and baking soda are excellent choices for those who prefer green cleaning methods. They’re safe, effective, and environmentally friendly.

Safety and Precautions

  • Always unplug appliances before cleaning.

  • Avoid mixing cleaning chemicals, particularly ammonia and bleach, to prevent harmful reactions.

  • Ensure good ventilation when using commercial cleaners.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Abrasive Materials: These can scratch the surface. Stick to soft cloths and sponges.

  • Ignoring the Grain: Always wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid streaks.

  • Using Food-Based Oils: These can go rancid and leave a residue.
